AROMATHERAPY
Aromatherapy aims to treat the whole person by helping to restore the harmony of the mind, body and spirit. It works with the pure properties of plants, using their essential oils in a natural, complementary therapy which can help improve both physical and emotional well being. Aromatherapy is most effective in the form of massage, often using relaxing or uplifting fragrances.
Origins of Aromatherapy
The ancient Egyptians, Romans and Greeks were amongst the first to appreciate the benefits of essential oils. The use of aromatic oils reached England’s shores around the 13th century, and when the plague arrived in Europe during the Renaissance period, it was those who used aromatic oils who were said to have survived, because of the many oils which have antiseptic properties.
Culpeper’s Complete Herbal (1652) listed medicinal properties of plants, but scientific study didn’t start until the 1920s, when the French chemist Gattefosse discovered that essential oils can be absorbed through the body’s circulation system. Gattefosse coined the term “aromatherapy” and modern aroma therapists have built on his ideas. The work of Marguerite Maury in the 50s was particularly important because it was she who introduced the idea of aromatherapy as a holistic treatment, customized to the unique needs of each client. Research into aromatherapy still continues today.
Benefits of Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy oils can help to promote emotional well-being and good health. Each oil has different therapeutic properties, so from within the range of many oils, aromatherapists can select oils that can benefit various conditions.
Essential oils will be chosen and blended to meet your own special needs, potential benefits can include:
The relief of stress and tension
A feeling of deep relaxation
Stimulated immune system
A calm and sooth the mind
Improve blood and lymph circulation
Increased energy levels
A general sense of well being
Aromatherapy is suitable for most adults but there are certain conditions where it should be avoided. To ensure the continued well being of clients, all treatments begin with a consultation, which enables your therapist to make sure that aromatherapy is right for you. In some instances your doctor’s permission may be required before treatments can commence, for example, if you have a heart condition. An individual confidential record card will be kept with any relevant notes for future treatments.
What happens during an Aromatherapy treatment
Aromatherapy massage usually lasts for around 1 ¼ hours. During the treatment, towels will be used to ensure your modesty.
Aromatherapy oils will be blended with a vegetable oil, known as a carrier oil, before being applied to the skin. Individual or a number of oils can be diluted in a carrier oil together, creating a blend tailored especially for you.
There are two main ways in which you can benefit from essential oils: either by absorption through the skin, or through your breathing. The oils can have a physical effect by causing chemical changes in your body’s systems, and a psychological effect when you inhale the fragrance. As the sense of smell has a direct access route to the brain, this can have an immediate effect on your body. So, remember to breathe deeply to enjoy those evocative aromas!
After your treatment
To gain maximum benefit from the essential oils, and to give them time to be absorbed into your skin, avoid bathing or showering for 8 hours.
Drink plenty of water - this helps flush away toxins. Try to avoid alcohol and tobacco for at least 24 hours. If you have any queries, don’t hesitate to ask for advice.
REFLEXOLOGY
Reflexology is a complementary therapy, which works on the feet to help heal the whole person not just the prevailing symptoms.
Whilst the art of reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, it wasn’t until 1913 that Dr William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as ‘zone therapy’. He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zones.
In the 1930’s Eunice Ingham further developed this zone theory into what is known as reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.
How can Reflexology help me
Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance.
Reflexology has been shown to be effective for:
Back Pain
Migraine
Arthritis
Sleep Disorders
Sports Injuries
Hormonal Imbalances
Digestive Disorders
Stress-Related Conditions
Reflexologists do not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.
Who Can Benefit From Reflexology
Reflexology is suitable for all ages and may bring relief from a wide range of acute and chronic conditions. After having completed a course of reflexology treatments for a specific condition, many people find it is beneficial to continue with regular treatments in order to maintain health and well being. While many people use reflexology as a way of relaxing the mind and body and counteracting stress, at the same time many doctors, consultants and other health care professionals recognise reflexology as a well established, respected and effective therapy.
With ever increasing levels of stress, it is important people take more responsibility for their own health care needs.
Reflexology helps us to cope on a physical, mental and emotional level thereby encouraging us to heal and maintain health in all areas of our lives.
What Happens When I Go For A treatment
On the first visit, the reflexology practitioner will have a preliminary talk with you to determine your present and past health and lifestyle.
The reflexologist will then use their hands to apply pressure to the feet. The application and the effect of the therapy is unique to each person.
A professionally trained reflexologist can detect subtle changes in specific points on the feet, and by working on these points may affect the corresponding organ or system of the body.
A treatment session usually lasts for about an hour. A course of treatments may be recommended depending on your body’s needs.
How Will I Feel After A Reflexology Treatment
After one or two treatments your body may respond in a very definite way. Most people note a sense of well-being and relaxation; sometimes people report feeling lethargic, nauseous or tearful, but this is transitory and is a part of the healing process.
This is vital information to feed back to the reflexologist as it shows how your body is responding to treatment. This will help the reflexologist to tailor a treatment plan specific to your needs.
